Any Christian minister who holds an opinion contrary to the current homosexual agenda runs the risk of being called a biblical literalist. If that is a crime then I am guilty. I believe, along with St. Augustine, that a Christian needs to take literally the spiritual and moral teachings of the New Testament. The words spoken by Jesus in the gospel of St. John, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" state a spiritual truth and are meant to be interpreted literally. In a similar fashion the moral exhortation written by St. Paul to the church in Corinth, "Do you not know that the un-righteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God," is to be accepted without reservation by the faithful. St. Paul goes on to say, "And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God." The church is not a hotel for saints. The church is a hospital for sinners where all are welcome to come and find spiritual and moral healing. The Episcopal Church welcomes into fellowship all who believe in Jesus Christ and are willing to subordinate the flesh to the Spirit of God. This is the essential role of the church and if it tries to become politically correct rather than biblically correct it goes astray. The current homosexual agenda is contrary to the ancient wisdom of mankind which was expressed in the pagan rites and ceremonies of divine marriage (theogamy) and in all the testimony of nature. The attempt to create a new man-made world by simply taking thought is laughable. The claim by proponents of the ordination of homosexuals and the blessing of same-sex marriages, that they are promoting the missionary growth of the church, is spurious. The church has lost more than one third of her membership in the last thirty years and many of the remaining members are dismayed and disheartened. What the Episcopal Church needs today are more bishops who, following in the footsteps of St. John the Baptist, will boldly rebuke vice and patiently suffer for the truth's sake. Canon Robinson, the bishop elect of the Diocese of New Hampshire, is undoubtedly a capable person. However, according to news reports he left his wife and two daughters and moved in with his homosexual lover. A bishop in the Episcopal Church is meant to guard the faith, unity and discipline of the church. Someone who has broken his marriage and ordination vows and is proud of it can hardly conform to this standard. This article appeared in the Monterey Herald Newspaper on Sunday, July 13, 2003 |
